Life Blood: Tasmanian River Series 1–30 November 2014

Alison Thomas

My work is an emotional response to the landscape, trying to reveal an underlying connection with the landscape rather than just an analytical copy. I am trying to be more painterly in my approach by layering washes and colours and experimenting with applying the paint in different ways. My background is printmaking, in particular etching, where the plate preparation and craft of the technique is so painstaking. It feels so free to draw with a paintbrush and use colour where in the etching process the use of multiple colours is very difficult. I think etching taught me a lot about tonality and the method of creating drama in an image. Winner of Tas Art 2014 Sassafrass Farms Award for oil or acrylic.
